My 5 Fav Go-To Podcasts
Podcast Time! I feel like I've featured a lot of my original favourites on my Insta page but I've rarely shared WHY I love them so much so I figured what better time to share my podcast recs with you than in the dead of winter when you're most likely stuck indoors and looking for something to do?
I do a lot of commuting for work and I live in Saskatchewan, where everything is at least an hour apart, so there tends to be a lot of long road trips to fill with good podcasts. I was a little late to the podcast train, only really discovering them for myself last winter (I know, I know, where did I live, under a rock?). So, if you're like me, and don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of the best podcasts to ever exist, here's some recs of my personal favourites:
- My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark
This was my first introduction to the podcast world and I'm SO GLAD that it was. To this day, it's still my favourite. Two valley girls that just verbally purge the thoughts all girls have while covering, comedically, the worst crimes in history. Comedy and True Crime may not seem like a good combination but, honestly, there's no better way to hear true crime stories. Affectively horrify you while still making it light enough that you won't lose sleep over it..... maybe that isn't a good thing..... but let's not think too hard on that! My fav episode is 60 - Jazz It as it features one of my personal favourites, The Axe Man of New Orleans! Wear a helmet, this one's a doozy.
2. The Last Podcast on the Left
I think this one must be the original True Crime/Comedy masterpiece. I started listening to it because of how often it was mentioned in MFM (listed above). These guys are HILARIOUS and really dig into the research side of things so you know you're getting the whole story. Not really appropriate for young ears so be warned, don't have your babies in the car with you.... or grandparents. They cover anything from gruesome murders to crazy cults to weird UFO activity and everything in between. So far I've listened to Rasputin, Heaven's Gate, Jonestown, Jack the Ripper, The Book of Revelation and, my favourite: The Donner Party. This one's super dark and super screwed up so be warned! (It's also the funniest one I've listened to yet which really worries me on my sense of humor). All of these episodes are multi-part ones that can fill hours of your time so it can be information overload, my advice is to take it in small doses.
It really will. It really, really will. Especially if you're currenlty following all the recent news on coronavirus or are in the midst of the worse cold/influenza season of your life. As I was when I started to listen to this one. These two girls are in medical school and have decided to share their knowledge on dangerous and deadly diseases with the world. The first episode covers the influenza of post WWI and how it can still get you (Get your flu shots people!!) and just gets scarier, and more interesting, from there. I'm still relatively new to this one so I don't have a favourite episode yet but I know I'm looking forward to the two part episode of The Plague. Super excited for it!
This one is a must if you're a history buff. They've been going for a few years and have countless episodes on women in history. From Mary Shelley, to Cleopatra, to the 6 wives of Henry the VIII, to Lizzie Borden, and anyone else you can possibly think of. I don't have a favourite as there is too many too choose from, but if you enjoy history and would love to learn about some of these amazing (and sometimes downright terrifying) women in history then this is the podcast for you.
This one is extremely different from the rest. It does not contain history nor true crime. Originally I started listening to this one because both of the hosts are former Vampire Diaries actresses. Candice King and Kayla Ewell who play Caroline Forbes and Vicky Donovan (respectively) are the hosts. They basically talk about things we all think about, how we thought we'd have life figured out by a certain age and how far from the truth that is. Topics on things we learned as we grew or still struggle through. My favourite episode for content was Finding Your Tribe because it discussed that this changes throughout different stages of your life and that growing away from friends and finding new ones is perfectly normal and just a part of life. I also found Carina MacKenzie's story of success in this episode inspiring. She started her career by writing Vampire Diaries recaps and being star-struck by Michael Trevino, she worked her way up to assistant writer on The Originals, and, eventually, she worked her way to showrunner of Roswell, New Mexico (basically becoming Michael Trevino's boss). This a good one for women in their 20's-30's who definitley don't have life figured out.
Of course there's so many more good ones that I could talk about for ages but now I want to hear yours. Leave a comment and tell me some of your favourite podcasts or what you think of the ones I discussed above.
Here's to a new week of discovery!
