What I’ve Been Streaming this Spring

Lately I’ve been in such a streaming slump that for the past year I’ve mainly been rewatching old sit-com favourites and avoiding the ever-growing list of new shows I need to watch or catch-up on. It’s becoming a problem. So instead of trying to slug through a list, I just decided to watch whatever I was in the mood for in the moment. No “I can’t start this one until I finish this one” anymore. Now I’ll have multiple shows on the go so I have one for every mood! I thought I’d share some of the shows I’ve been loving lately (I’ve been in a fun mood so most of these are comedic) in case there’s anyone else out there struggling to find something good to watch.

  1. Sex Education

Copyright belongs to Netflix

This show is hilarious and deep. I binged the first two seasons during the start of lockdown but put of season 3 for a long time as I’d heard some disappointing reviews. Why did I put this off!?! It was soooo good. I think at this point we’ve all agreed we don’t watch it for Otis (who is truly the worst) but for all of the other amazing cast involved in this show. Adam has become a quick favourite to my surprise but his story arc has been fantastic. I liked how season 3 focused more on those “side stories” and how much character growth we got to see this season. It was spectacular and I can’t wait to see Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor because he was FIRE this season as our beloved Eric.

Where to stream it: This is a Netflix Original Series

2. The Great

Copyright belongs to Hulu

This series came out of nowhere and it is genius! A very VERY loose retelling of Catherine the Great’s rise to power, this parody retelling will have you in stitches. It’s pretty vulgar and quite outlandish but has a great time poking fun at the Russian monarchy and aristocracy of the time. Watching Catherine’s character go from the innocent believer to a woman craving power and change is so fun to watch! If you like more historical based shows, especially any loose retellings of actual history, this is a great fit for you!

Where to stream it: It’s a Hulu Original. Also available on Amazon Prime Video (Canada)

3. Doctor Who (12th and onwards)

Copyright belongs to BBC

I’ve been revisiting an old favourite with this one. In times of excessive stress, I return to this one often and at the start of the pandemic I figured “what better time to re-start Doctor Who?”. Once I got midway through Eleven and Clara’s season, I powered down and strayed to other shows. Lately, I realized that I’ve never actually FINISHED Twelves run nor seen a single episode of Thirteen’s (our very first WOMAN Doctor!!). Obviously this had to be rectified immediately and was just proven further with the announcement of the brilliant Nucti Gatwa from Sex Education as the Fourteenth Doctor! I’ve been having such a great time catching up on Capaldi’s seasons (he was such a good Doctor!) that I can’t wait to get into Jody’s run and see what she’s done with the role. If you ever need a fun adventure show, this is the ultimate choice!

Where to stream it: Right now you can stream it on Crave TV

A few shows I have on the radar include: Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (season 4), and a Downton Abbey rewatch.

Let me know what shows you’ve been loving lately!
